Ingredients:

For the Casserole:

  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For the Topping:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and diced
  • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Directions:

1️⃣ Prep Casserole: Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Spread the bread cubes evenly in the dish to form a uniform layer.

2️⃣ Mix Custard: In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined. Pour this custard mixture over the bread cubes, ensuring each piece is soaked. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight to allow the bread to absorb the custard.

3️⃣ Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) when ready to bake.

4️⃣ Prepare Topping: In a small bowl, combine light brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and diced butter. Use fingers or a fork to mix until the mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle this topping evenly over the soaked bread in the casserole dish.

5️⃣ Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crisp to the touch.

6️⃣ Serve: Allow the casserole to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm, optionally dusted with powdered sugar or drizzled with maple syrup.
