Greek Steak Pitas with Caramelized Onions and Mushrooms

“Greek Steak Pitas with Caramelized Onions and Mushrooms is a tasty and straightforward meal that combines tender slices of steak with sweet caramelized onions and savory mushrooms.”

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 to 1 1/2 lb top sirloin steak, cut in thin strips
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon Cavender’s All Purpose Greek Seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper
  • 2 large onions, sliced
  • 8 fresh baby portabella mushrooms, sliced…

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. For the Onions:
    1. Heat a skillet over medium-low heat.
    2. Add the butter and 2 tablespoons of oil to the skillet. Let the butter melt.
    3. Once the butter has melted, add the sliced onions.
    4. Stir the onions frequently and cook them down for at least 30 minutes. The key is to cook them low and slow. Adjust the temperature if they begin to brown too quickly.

    For the Steak:

    1. In a ziplock bag, combine the sliced steak with oregano, Cavender’s seasoning (or your preferred seasoning), salt, and pepper.
    2. Mix until the seasoning evenly coats the steak slices.

    Cooking the Steak:

    1. Heat 1-2 tablespoons of oil in a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat.
    2. In batches, sear the seasoned steak slices for 1-2 minutes per side, depending on your preferred level of doneness. Avoid overcrowding the pan.
    3. If the pan becomes too dry, add another tablespoon of oil.
    4. Once the steak is cooked to your liking, add the mushrooms to the pan and sauté until they become tender.

    Assembling the Pitas:

    1. Take a pita bread round and lay it flat.
    2. Add a portion of the cooked steak on one side of the pita.
    3. Top the steak with the caramelized onions and sautéed mushrooms.
    4. Fold the other half of the pita over the fillings, creating a semi-circle shape.
