Fried Bologna is a beloved classic that’s stood the test of time. Its simple yet satisfying flavors make it a comforting choice for any meal. Whether enjoyed in a sandwich, with eggs, or as a quick snack, Fried Bologna continues to be a timeless favorite.

Fried Bologna

INGREDIENTS:

  • Bologna
  • Bread
  • Sliced Cheese
  • Mayo / mustard
  • Tomato
  • Onion

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Prepare your skillet by either spraying it with cooking spray or heating a small amount of oil over medium-high heat. While the skillet is heating, get your bologna ready. If you have deli bologna, there’s no need to remove the red rim. However, if you’re using Bar S or Oscar Mayer bologna, you should peel off the red rim and discard it. As the skillet heats up, spread mayo, mustard, or your preferred dressing on your buns, and slice any vegetables you’d like to add to the sandwich. Bologna cooks quickly, so it’s best to have everything prepared before you start cooking.

     

  2. After removing the red rim, place the bologna in the skillet. It will sizzle as it cooks, similar to cooking sausage. When you notice the center beginning to bubble, make two slits in the center to form an “X.” This prevents the bologna from curling during frying. Some people prefer to cut the bologna before placing it in the pan, and some even make slits along the outer rim.

     

  3. Fry the bologna for about three minutes on each side over medium heat. The ideal fried bologna has a slight char, giving it a caramelized flavor.

     

  4. Once the bologna is ready, take it out of the skillet and let it rest on a paper towel to absorb excess grease. You can even pat it down with the paper towel. Then, place the bologna on your bun, add cheese, tomatoes, and onions if you like. Serve your East Texas sandwich with your favorite chips and savor the delicious flavors.
