Method
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples with white sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. Toss until the apples are evenly coated.
- Remove the frozen pie crust from the freezer and pour the apple mixture into it. Dot the top with butter.
- Lightly cover the pie with aluminum foil (do not seal) and bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes.
- While the pie is baking, prepare the streusel topping. In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, oats, brown sugar, lemon zest, and cinnamon. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- After 10 minutes, remove the pie from the oven and sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the partially baked apples.
- Reduce the oven temperature to 375°F (190°C) and return the pie to the oven.
- Bake for an additional 30 to 35 minutes, or until the streusel is golden brown and the apples are tender.
- If the streusel starts to brown too quickly, loosely cover the pie with aluminum foil to prevent excess browning.
- Once baked, remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
For a twist, try adding chopped nuts or dried cranberries to the streusel topping for extra crunch and flavor. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for the perfect finishing touch.
