Equipment

Large Bowl
Medium bowl
9-inch Pie Dish

Ingredients

  • For the Apple Pie:
  • 5 cups apples peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 2/3 cup white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 9-inch frozen pie crust
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • For the Streusel Topping:
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup butter

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  • In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples with white sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. Toss until the apples are evenly coated.
  • Remove the frozen pie crust from the freezer and pour the apple mixture into it. Dot the top with butter.
  • Lightly cover the pie with aluminum foil (do not seal) and bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes.
  • While the pie is baking, prepare the streusel topping. In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, oats, brown sugar, lemon zest, and cinnamon. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • After 10 minutes, remove the pie from the oven and sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the partially baked apples.
  • Reduce the oven temperature to 375°F (190°C) and return the pie to the oven.
  • Bake for an additional 30 to 35 minutes, or until the streusel is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  • If the streusel starts to brown too quickly, loosely cover the pie with aluminum foil to prevent excess browning.
  • Once baked, remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For a twist, try adding chopped nuts or dried cranberries to the streusel topping for extra crunch and flavor. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for the perfect finishing touch.
