  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into cubes Use stale bread if possible for better soaking.
  • 2 cups blueberries (fresh or frozen) Thaw frozen blueberries before using.
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

Topping

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (for topping)
  • 1 cup oats (for crumble, optional) Use oats for added texture.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, 1/4 cup brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract until well mixed.
  • In a greased baking dish, layer the bread cubes and blueberries evenly.
  • Pour the egg mixture over the bread and blueberries, pressing down slightly to soak the bread.
  • In another bowl, mix the melted butter, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and oats (if using) to make a crumble. Sprinkle over the top of the casserole.

Baking

  • Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  • Then remove the foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes until the top is golden and set.
  • Let it cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Serve warm with maple syrup, whipped cream, or more fresh blueberries on top. You can store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheat in the oven or microwave. Make it the night before and let it sit in the fridge overnight.
