  • 1 medium head cabbage, chopped
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup cider vinegar
  • 4 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: red pepper flakes for heat

Cooking

  • In a large skillet, cook the bacon until crispy. Remove the bacon and set it aside, leaving the bacon drippings in the pan.
  • Add the chopped onion to the skillet with the bacon drippings and sauté until soft and translucent.
  • Stir in the chopped cabbage and cook for about 5 minutes until slightly wilted.
  • Add the sugar and cider vinegar to the skillet. Stir well to combine and cook until the cabbage is tender, about 10-15 minutes.
  • Add the crumbled bacon back into the skillet and mix well.
  • Season with salt, pepper, and optional red pepper flakes to taste.
  • Serve warm as a side dish.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. Reheat in a skillet or microwave. Adjust sugar and vinegar to taste. You can add carrots or bell peppers for extra flavor and color.
