Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 bunch Collard Greens Fresh is best, but frozen can work.
  • 4 slices Bacon For that smoky richness.
  • 1 medium Onion Adds sweetness and depth.
  • 2 cloves Garlic Aromatic and flavorful.
  • 1 tsp Salt Essential seasoning.
  • 1 tsp Black Pepper Essential seasoning.
  • 1/2 tsp Red Pepper Flakes A hint of heat for balance.
  • 4 cups Chicken Broth or Water Helps the greens cook down and absorb flavors.
  • 2 tbsp Vinegar Optional, adds a bright note at the end.

Method

Cooking Process
  1. In a large pot, fry the bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove it, allowing it to drain on paper towels, but keep the drippings in the pot.
  2. Toss in your chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté until softened and fragrant, about 3–4 minutes.
  3. Pile in the collard greens and pour in the chicken broth or water, enough to cover the greens.
  4. Sprinkle in salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes to taste.
  5. Bring to a gentle simmer, cover, and let it cook for 45 minutes to an hour, until the greens are tender.
  6. If you like, stir in the vinegar before serving. Crumble the bacon on top for that finishing touch.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for longer storage. Wash collard greens thoroughly to remove grit.
