Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs can substitute with gluten-free breadcrumbs
  • 6 slices bacon (cooked and chopped) adds smoky flavor
  • 1 teaspoon seasoned salt
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil for frying
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef can substitute with ground turkey
  • 1 large onion (diced) for patties
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh black pepper
For the Gravy
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (for coating)
  • 1 large onion (chopped) for the gravy
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup water plus additional for the gravy
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (for thickening)
  • 1/4 teaspoon seasoning salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Gravy Master (orange top)
  • 2 cups freshly sliced mushrooms can vary by type

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, combine the egg, bread crumbs, chopped bacon, seasoned salt, ground beef, diced onion, garlic powder, and black pepper. Mix until all ingredients are well combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into 4 to 6 evenly sized hamburger patties.
  3. In a shallow dish, spread out 1 cup of flour. Dredge each patty in the flour to coat both sides lightly.
Cooking
  1. Heat 3 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties to the skillet, cooking until they’re browned on both sides. Remove the patties and set aside, reserving the drippings in the pan.
  2. In the same skillet, add the chopped onion with a tablespoon of water. Sauté over medium heat until the onions are lightly caramelized, stirring frequently.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the beef broth, 1 cup of water, 1/4 cup of flour, seasoning salt, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and Gravy Master until smooth.
  4. Pour the broth mixture into the skillet with the onions. Stir constantly until the mixture thickens.
  5. Return the cooked hamburger steaks to the skillet, flipping them a few times to coat with gravy.
  6. Add the sliced mushrooms, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for about 20 minutes, flipping the patties every 5 minutes to ensure they absorb the gravy.
  7. Once finished, serve the hamburger steaks over buttered mashed potatoes and enjoy!

Notes

For best results, let the patties rest after cooking to retain juiciness. Use the right amount of flour to prevent the gravy from becoming too thick. Substitutions include ground chicken or turkey.
