  • 2 teaspoons hot sauce
  • 1 large egg
  • 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 cups yellow cornmeal
  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • 1 to 1.5 teaspoons Cajun seasoning (like Tony's) Customize the seasoning to taste.

  1. Preheat the frying oil to 375°F on your stovetop or in a fryer.
  2. Cut the okra into 1/2-inch slices and set aside.
  3. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, hot sauce, garlic powder, and egg until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the cornmeal, self-rising flour, and Cajun seasoning.
  5. Dip the okra slices into the buttermilk mixture, allowing any excess to drip off, and then dredge them in the flour mixture.
  6. Fry the okra in batches for about 3 to 4 minutes, or until golden brown.
  7. Remove the fried okra and place it on a paper towel-lined plate. Sprinkle with additional salt or Cajun seasoning to taste. Serve hot.
