Ingredients
  

For the marinade and sauce
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce (optional)
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
For the beef
  • 1 lb beef strips (sirloin or ribeye)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp grated fresh ginger
For cooking
  • 5 tbsp vegetable oil, in total
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • to taste salt and pepper

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, whisk together 2 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp oyster sauce, grated ginger, minced garlic, and sesame oil. Toss the beef strips in this marinade and let sit for 10-15 minutes.
Cooking Onions
  1. Heat 1 tbsp vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until they are soft and slightly caramelized. Season with salt and pepper, then remove and set aside.
Searing Beef
  1. In the same pan, heat 2 tbsp of vegetable oil over high heat. Add the marinated beef strips, stirring quickly for 2-3 minutes until browned but not overcooked.
Making Sauce
  1. In a small bowl, whisk together 2 tbsp soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, and cornstarch. Pour this mixture over the beef and let it simmer until thickened.
Combine & Serve
  1. Add the sautéed onions back into the pan, stir to combine, and serve hot over steamed rice or noodles.

Notes
