Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1.5-2 pounds ground beef (80/20 for juiciness; leaner if preferred) You can use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups beef broth (low-sodium preferred)
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste or Dijon mustard (optional) For added depth of flavor.
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour (or 2 tbsp cornstarch for gluten-free) Thickening agent for gravy.
  • 2 tablespoons butter or oil (for sautéing)
  • to taste salt and freshly ground black pepper
Optional Ingredients
  • as desired sliced mushrooms
  • as desired fresh thyme
  • splash cream Add at the end for richer flavor.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, mix the ground beef with chopped onions, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Shape this mixture into 6-8 patties.
Cooking
  1. Heat butter or oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side. Remove them from the skillet and set them aside.
  2. In the same skillet, add flour (or cornstarch). Stir for about a minute to eliminate any rawness. Gradually pour in the beef broth while whisking to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and the optional tomato paste or mustard, stirring to combine.
  3. Return the patties to the skillet, allowing them to simmer in the gravy for 5-10 minutes to soak up all that deliciousness.
  4. If desired, stir in sliced mushrooms, thyme, or a splash of cream before serving.
