Ingredients

  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 onion, diced onion (any color)
  • 2 bell peppers, diced bell peppers
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/3 cup BBQ sauce
  • 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
  • 1 cup beef broth (can substitute chicken broth)
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • Provolone cheese
  • 1-2 packages gluten-free buns or regular buns (if not gluten-free)

Equipment

  • Skillet
  • Baking Sheet
  • Spatula

Method

  1. Mince the 6 cloves of garlic and dice the onion. Also, dice the 2 bell peppers.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Once heated, add the minced garlic and onions. Sauté for 2-3 minutes, stirring often.
  3. Add the diced peppers and continue to sauté for 5-6 minutes, stirring often.
  4. Add the 2 pounds of ground beef (or ground meat of choice) to the skillet along with 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt and pepper. Sauté for 8-10 minutes or until fully cooked, breaking the meat apart with a spatula. Drain any excess fat.
  5. Stir in 2 teaspoons of Italian seasoning until combined.
  6. Add 1/3 cup of BBQ sauce, 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce, and 1 tablespoon of white wine vinegar (or vinegar of choice) to the skillet. Stir until combined.
  7. In a separate bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 1 cup of beef broth, stirring until the cornstarch is completely dissolved to create a slurry. Pour the slurry into the skillet and stir until combined.
  8. Reduce the heat to medium-low and allow the sauce to thicken slightly.
  9. To serve, set the oven to 'Broiler'. Place a generous portion of the filling onto each bun (gluten-free or regular). Arrange the sandwiches on a baking sheet.
  10. Top each sandwich with a slice of Provolone cheese (or cheese of choice). Place the baking sheet under the broiler for 2-3 minutes or until the cheese has melted.
  11. Serve the sandwiches once the cheese has melted.
