Ingredients

Apple Filling
  • 6-7 medium medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
Crumb Topping
  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes For a dairy-free option, swap some butter with coconut oil.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples. Place them in a large mixing bowl.
  3. In the bowl with the apples, combine the granulated sugar, cinnamon, optional nutmeg, all-purpose flour, and lemon juice. Toss gently to evenly coat the apple slices.
  4. Transfer the apple mixture into a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix the oats, flour, brown sugar, additional cinnamon, and salt together.
  6. Add the cold butter cubes to the dry mixture. Blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  7. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple mixture in the baking dish.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling up.
  2. Allow the apple crisp to cool slightly before serving.
