Method
Preparation
- In a bowl, mix together flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Gradually add the warm water, stirring until well combined. The batter should be thick yet pourable.
- Cover the bowl with a cloth and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
Frying
- Heat the vegetable oil in a deep pot over medium heat.
- Once the dough has risen, use a spoon to drop small balls of dough into the hot oil. Fry them until golden brown on all sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove them and drain on paper towels.
Serving
- In a separate bowl, warm the honey slightly and then drizzle it over the fried loukoumades.
- Optional: Add your choice of toppings, such as melted chocolate, chopped nuts, or a sprinkle of cinnamon and powdered sugar, before serving.
Notes
Serve the loukoumades warm, drizzled with honey and sprinkled with your favorite toppings. They are best enjoyed fresh out of the frying pan. If you have any leftovers, store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Reheat them briefly in a microwave before serving again for a warm treat. Make sure your oil is hot enough before frying to get crispy, golden doughnuts. Do not overcrowd the pan; fry in batches for even cooking. Be creative with your toppings to add a fun twist to the traditional recipe.
