Preparation
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture is frothy.
- In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture along with the olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
- Stir in the chopped jalapenos and shredded cheddar cheese until well combined.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it feels smooth and elastic.
- Put the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
Baking
- Preheat your oven to 450°F and place your Dutch oven (with the lid) inside to heat up.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and shape it into a round loaf. Carefully take out the hot Dutch oven, and place the dough inside. Cover it with the lid.
- Bake for 30 minutes. After that, remove the lid and bake for another 10-15 minutes until the crust is golden brown.
- Take the bread out of the Dutch oven and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
Store leftover bread in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days. You can also wrap it in plastic wrap and freeze it for up to a month. Just let it thaw at room temperature before using. Tips: Make sure the water is warm, but not too hot, as it can kill the yeast. You can adjust the number of jalapenos based on how spicy you like your bread. If you want a thicker crust, bake the bread a little longer after removing the lid. Variations: You can add herbs, garlic, or different types of cheese.
