Preparation
- Heat a skillet over medium heat until warm but not smoking.
- Spread about 1/2 tablespoon of butter on one side of each slice of bread.
- Place four buttered slices, butter-side down, in the skillet.
- On each slice in the pan, add one slice of cheese, two slices of ham, and another slice of cheese.
- Season lightly with salt and pepper and top with the remaining bread, butter-side up.
- Press gently with a spatula to compact the sandwich.
Cooking
- Cook until the bottom is golden brown, 3–4 minutes.
- Flip the sandwiches carefully and cook the other side until golden and the cheese is thoroughly melted, another 3–4 minutes.
- Transfer to a cutting board, slice in half, and serve immediately.
