Preparation
- Soak the dried navy beans in plenty of water overnight.
- Drain and rinse the beans, then place them in a large pot with 4 cups of fresh water.
- Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer the beans until they are tender, about 1 to 1.5 hours.
Baking
- Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C).
- In a large baking dish, mix the cooked beans with the chopped onion, brown sugar, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
- If using bacon, fold it into the mixture.
- Mix everything together, ensuring even distribution of the ingredients, then cover the dish with foil.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally, until the beans are thick and bubbling.
- Allow the dish to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days. They can also be frozen for up to 3 months. When reheating, add water to restore moisture if needed.
