Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks
  • 1 pound ground beef Opt for lean ground beef if you prefer less fat.
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs These keep the patties juicy and tender.
  • 1/4 cup onions, finely chopped Adds flavor; their sweetness enhances during cooking.
  • 1 piece egg Acts as a binder, ensuring that the patties hold together.
  • to taste salt Essential for seasoning.
  • to taste pepper Essential for seasoning.
  • 2 tablespoons oil A neutral oil like canola or vegetable is best.
For the Gravy
  • 1 cup beef broth This is what infuses richness into your gravy.
  • 1 cup onions, sliced Provides sweetness and depth for the gravy.
  • 2 tablespoons flour Helps thicken your gravy.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Adds a tanginess that enhances overall flavor.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined. Shape into four equal patties.
Cooking the Patties
  1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they’re browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
Making the Gravy
  1. In the same skillet, add sliced onions and cook until soft, about 3-4 minutes. Sprinkle the flour over the onions, stirring well to combine.
  2. Gradually add in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce while stirring. Bring to a simmer until the gravy thickens.
Combining
  1. Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spoon the gravy over them, and let it cook for another 2 minutes.
