Method
Preparation
- In a saucepan, mix together sugar, flour, eggs, and 2 cups of milk until the mixture is smooth.
- Incorporate another 2 cups of milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract, whisking until fully blended.
- Cook this mixture on medium heat, stirring constantly until it thickens (approximately 15-20 minutes).
- Once thickened, remove the saucepan from the heat and allow it to rest for about 10 minutes.
Assembly
- Line a 9x13 baking dish with vanilla wafers. Arrange some of them upright along the edges for a charming touch, then layer sliced bananas on top.
- Pour the prepared pudding over the banana and wafer layers, ensuring everything is evenly covered.
- Finally, cover the top with additional sliced bananas and either whole or crushed vanilla wafers.
- For the best outcome, allow it to sit at room temperature for up to an hour or refrigerate for 3 to 4 hours (or overnight) before serving.

Notes
To store, keep the pudding in the refrigerator covered with plastic wrap. Best consumed within 2 to 3 days. For a thicker pudding, cook a bit longer while stirring constantly. You can also use vanilla bean paste for a more intense flavor.
