Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 325°F.
- Score the surface of the ham in a diamond pattern about 1/8 inch deep and insert whole cloves into the center of each diamond.
- Place the ham in a large roasting pan with a rack, tent it with foil, and bake for 2 to 2 1/2 hours.
Preparing the Glaze
- In a small saucepan, combine brown sugar, mustard, vinegar, and soda. Heat until bubbly, cooking for about 15 minutes until it thickens.
Glazing and Finishing
- After 1 1/2 to 2 hours of baking, remove the foil and brush the glaze over the ham every 20 minutes until it turns shiny and glossy.
- Once done, remove the ham from the oven and let it rest for 15 to 20 minutes before carving.
Notes
For extra flavor, let the ham sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before baking. You can add crushed pineapple or apricot preserves to your glaze for a unique twist. Basting frequently helps create a caramelized crust.
