Ingredients

For the Bake
  • 5 large croissants (preferably day-old), cut into 1-inch pieces Day-old croissants absorb the custard better.
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips Can be substituted with dark or white chocolate.
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 4 large eggs
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting
  • Fresh berries or whipped cream, for serving Optional toppings for serving.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Place the cut croissant pieces evenly in the baking dish. Sprinkle the chocolate chips generously over and between the croissant layers.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until everything is fully combined.
  4. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the croissants. Use a spatula to gently press down the croissants, helping them soak up the custard.
  5. For best results, allow the mixture to sit for 10–15 minutes so that the croissants absorb more custard.
Baking
  1. Bake uncovered for 45–50 minutes, until the top is golden and the custard is set. If the top browns too quickly, tent it with foil for the last 10–15 minutes.
Serving
  1. After baking, let it cool slightly, then dust with powdered sugar. Serve warm, topped with fresh berries or a dollop of whipped cream.

Notes

Day-old croissants are best for soaking up the custard without getting mushy. You can customize the chocolate and add spices or nuts for extra flavor.
