  • 2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes Thinly sliced
  • 1 pound diced smoked ham Use leftovers or freshly diced
  • 2 cups heavy cream Can mix with milk for a lighter version
  • 3 tablespoons butter For greasing the baking dish and sautéing
  • 3 cloves garlic Minced
  • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme Can substitute with other herbs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 cup grated cheese Optional, for topping

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a baking dish generously with butter.
  3. Thinly slice the Yukon Gold potatoes.
  4. Melt butter in a saucepan and sauté minced garlic until fragrant.
Assembly
  1. Add heavy cream, thyme, salt, and pepper to the pan. Bring to a gentle simmer.
  2. Layer half of the potato slices in the baking dish, followed by half of the diced ham.
  3. Pour half of the creamy mixture over the layered potatoes and ham.
  4. Repeat the layering process with the remaining potatoes, ham, and cream.
Baking
  1. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  2. Remove the foil, sprinkle cheese on top if desired, and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
