Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 4 cups fresh broccoli florets (Frozen broccoli works as a substitute.) Steam fresh broccoli until just tender.
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese Key for that melty goodness.
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese Adds tang and depth.
  • 1 cup heavy cream For richness.
  • 1/2 cup milk Whole milk is favored, but skim is fine.
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter Essential for the cheese sauce.
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour To thicken the sauce.
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder Flavor enhancer.
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder Brings depth to the dish.
  • Salt and pepper To taste.
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs For that perfect crispy topping.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil Helps the breadcrumbs crisp.

Method

Prepare the Broccoli
  1. If using fresh broccoli, steam it until just tender and bright green, about 3-4 minutes. If using frozen, just thaw and drain.
Make the Cheese Sauce
  1. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  2. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute to remove the raw taste.
  3. Slowly add the heavy cream and milk, whisking constantly until the mixture thickens (about 3-5 minutes).
  4. Stir in garlic powder, onion powder, and season with salt and pepper.
  5. Remove from heat and fold in the shredded cheddar and Parmesan until fully melted.
Assemble the Casserole
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the broccoli with the cheese sauce. Toss until well coated.
  3. Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish.
  4. In a small bowl, mix breadcrumbs with olive oil, then sprinkle over the top of the casserole.
Bake
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes or until bubbling and golden on top.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider adding a sprinkle of smoked paprika or cayenne for a little kick. You can switch up the cheese — Gruyère or mozzarella can bring different tastes to the party.
