  • 1/4 cup sugar for the pie crust
  • 1/4 cup ice water for the pie crust
For the Apple Filling
  • 6 cups apples, peeled, cored, and sliced Granny Smith or Honeycrisp are great choices
  • 3/4 cup sugar for the apple filling
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour for the apple filling
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon for the apple filling
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice for the apple filling
For the Crumb Topping
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour for the crumb topping
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats for the crumb topping
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar for the crumb topping
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened for the crumb topping
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon for the crumb topping

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix 2 1/2 cups flour and 1/4 cup sugar. Cut in the chilled butter until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.
  3. Stir in the ice water until the dough forms. Roll out the dough and fit it into a 9-inch pie plate. Trim any extra dough and set it aside.
Making the Filling
  1. In another bowl, combine sliced apples, 3/4 cup sugar, 2 tbsp flour, 1 tsp cinnamon, and lemon juice. Toss to coat the apples well.
  2. Pour the apple filling into the prepared crust.
Making the Crumb Topping
  1. In a bowl, mix 1 cup flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, softened butter, and 1 tsp cinnamon until crumbly.
  2. Sprinkle this topping evenly over the apple filling.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, then lower the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 35-40 minutes, or until the apples are soft and the topping is golden brown.
  2. Allow the pie to cool before serving. Enjoy your classic Dutch apple pie!

Notes

Use cold butter for the crust to create a flakier texture. Mix different types of apples for a more complex flavor. Let the pie cool to help set the filling before serving. You can add raisins or cranberries for added sweetness, or drizzle caramel sauce for a fun twist.
