Ingredients

For the Pie Crust

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour for the pie crust
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced for the pie crust
  • 1/4 cup sugar for the pie crust
  • 1/4 cup ice water for the pie crust

For the Apple Filling

  • 6 cups apples, peeled, cored, and sliced Granny Smith or Honeycrisp are great choices
  • 3/4 cup sugar for the apple filling
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour for the apple filling
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon for the apple filling
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice for the apple filling

For the Crumb Topping

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour for the crumb topping
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats for the crumb topping
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar for the crumb topping
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened for the crumb topping
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon for the crumb topping

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  • In a large bowl, mix 2 1/2 cups flour and 1/4 cup sugar. Cut in the chilled butter until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.
  • Stir in the ice water until the dough forms. Roll out the dough and fit it into a 9-inch pie plate. Trim any extra dough and set it aside.

Making the Filling

  • In another bowl, combine sliced apples, 3/4 cup sugar, 2 tbsp flour, 1 tsp cinnamon, and lemon juice. Toss to coat the apples well.
  • Pour the apple filling into the prepared crust.

Making the Crumb Topping

  • In a bowl, mix 1 cup flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, softened butter, and 1 tsp cinnamon until crumbly.
  • Sprinkle this topping evenly over the apple filling.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, then lower the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 35-40 minutes, or until the apples are soft and the topping is golden brown.
  • Allow the pie to cool before serving. Enjoy your classic Dutch apple pie!

Notes

Use cold butter for the crust to create a flakier texture. Mix different types of apples for a more complex flavor. Let the pie cool to help set the filling before serving. You can add raisins or cranberries for added sweetness, or drizzle caramel sauce for a fun twist.
