Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (room temperature) Gives control over salt; add 1/8 teaspoon fine sea salt if using salted butter.
  • 1/2 cup powdered (confectioners’) sugar Helps keep the dough tender; can substitute with granulated sugar that's blended to powder consistency.
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour For gluten-free version, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and powdered sugar together using a hand mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2–3 minutes.
  3. Gradually add the flour in roughly 1/2-cup increments, mixing until each addition is incorporated. Knead the dough gently until it forms a soft, pliable ball.
Shaping and Baking
  1. Choose one shaping method: roll into 1-inch balls, pipe into rosettes, or roll into a log and slice.
  2. Bake the cookies at 350°F (175°C) for 10–14 minutes, until the edges just begin to color.
  3. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

These cookies firm up as they cool; slightly underbaking yields a softer center. Store cooled cookies in an airtight container layered with parchment for up to 5 days.
