Ingredients

For the marinade

  • 1 lb cube steak, cut into strips
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg

For the coating

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup crushed saltine crackers
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • Oil for frying

For garnish and serving

  • Chopped parsley for garnish
  • Optional: ranch or country gravy for dipping

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg. Add the steak strips and let them marinate for 30 minutes.

Coating

  • In another bowl, mix the flour, crushed crackers, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.

Frying

  • Heat oil in a skillet to 350°F (175°C).
  • Take the marinated steak strips and dredge them in the flour mixture, pressing to coat them well.
  • Fry the coated steak strips in the hot oil for about 2-3 minutes on each side until they are golden brown and crispy.
  • Remove the fried steak fingers and drain them on paper towels. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce!

Notes

Make sure the oil is hot enough before frying to get that crispy texture. Use a thermometer if you have one! Don’t overcrowd the skillet. Fry the strips in batches to avoid steaming them. Adjust the seasoning in the flour mixture based on your taste preferences. You can add a bit of cayenne pepper for extra heat!
