Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a bowl, mix the all-purpose flour, brown sugar, and melted butter until the mixture is crumbly.
- Press this mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
Baking
- Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until it is lightly golden.
- Remove the crust from the oven and immediately pour the caramel sauce evenly over it.
- Sprinkle the chocolate chunks and, if desired, the chopped nuts over the caramel layer.
- Return the dish to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the caramel is bubbly and the chocolate chunks are melted.
- Remove from the oven and sprinkle the chocolate chips over the top. Let them sit for a few minutes to melt and spread them for a smooth layer if you wish.
- Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan before cutting them into squares.

To store, keep in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week or refrigerate for up to two weeks. Separate layers with parchment paper to prevent sticking. For a delicious twist, add peanut butter in place of some of the caramel sauce.
