Brownie Butter Cake

Equipment

  • Loaf pan
  • Medium saucepan
  • Mixing bowls

Ingredients

Brownie:

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • 4 ounces semi-sweet chocolate coarsely chopped

Butter Cake:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 3 tablespoons milk

Instructions

To make the brownies:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Prepare an 8.5 x 4.5 x 3 inches loaf pan by spraying with floured cooking spray or greasing and flouring it. Set aside.
  • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and chopped chocolate, stirring constantly.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg and granulated sugar. Add the melted chocolate mixture and mix until evenly combined. Gradually add the all-purpose flour and mix until well combined.
  • Pour the brownie batter into the prepared pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes.

While the brownies bake, mix the butter cake:

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and baking powder.
  • In a separate bowl, beat the butter with the granulated sugar until creamy.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • Add the milk and mix well.
  • Fold in the dry ingredients and mix to form the batter.
  • Pour the butter cake batter over the hot brownies in the pan.
  • Bake at 320°F for about 35-40 minutes or until the top is domed, the center is set, and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Cool and serve.

Notes

Ensure the brownie batter is poured into the pan before starting the butter cake batter.
Be careful not to overmix the butter cake batter to maintain its texture.
Allow the cake to cool before slicing for cleaner cuts.
