Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 pound thick-cut bacon, small diced
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 head of cabbage, cored and cut into bite-sized pieces
Seasonings and Additions
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon light brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter

Method

Cooking the Bacon
  1. In a Dutch oven or large skillet with deep sides, cook the bacon over medium heat until crispy, about 12-15 minutes. Place the bacon on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess grease.
Sautéing Onions and Garlic
  1. Reserve ¼ cup of the bacon fat in the pan. Add the sliced onions and sauté until translucent, about 10 minutes.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
Cooking the Cabbage
  1. Add the cored and chopped cabbage, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, seasoned salt, and black pepper to the pan. Stir and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10-15 minutes until the cabbage is tender.
Finishing Touches
  1. Return the crispy bacon to the pan and toss in the salted butter. Mix until the butter has melted and the bacon is evenly distributed. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed, then serve hot.
