Ingredients

For the apple filling
  • 6 cups apples, peeled, cored, and sliced Use tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for best results.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Prevents browning and enhances flavor.
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
For the topping
  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed Can substitute with coconut sugar for a different flavor.
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces Ensure it's cold for a crumbly texture.
  • pinch salt

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine your sliced apples with the lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss well to coat, and then spread this mixture evenly in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.
  3. In another bowl, mix together the oats, brown sugar, flour, and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Assembly and Baking
  1. Evenly sprinkle the oat mixture over the apple layer in the baking dish.
  2. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbly and tender.
