Ingredients

For the Beef Patties
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1.5 cups saltine crackers, crumbled
  • 1 cup milk (for the beef mixture)
  • 1 teaspoon Italian herbs
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • dash cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 0.5 cup all-purpose flour
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
For the Gravy
  • 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup 10.5 ounces
  • 1 cup milk (for gravy)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, crumbled saltine crackers, 1 cup milk, Italian herbs, onion powder, garlic powder, dash of cayenne, salt, and pepper. Mix everything until well incorporated.
  3. Shape the mixture into patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
  4. Coat each patty with all-purpose flour.
  5. In a skillet over medium-high heat, brown each steak for 2-3 minutes per side. Set aside in the baking dish.
Assembling and Baking
  1. In a separate bowl, whisk the condensed cream of mushroom soup and 1 cup of milk together. Pour this mixture over the browned steaks.
  2. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes.
  3. Once done, let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Consider using fresh herbs instead of dried for a flavor boost. Don't skip the browning step; it adds depth to the flavor. If you love cheese, sprinkle some shredded cheese on top during the last few minutes of baking for a melty topping.
