  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp baking soda
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter (at room temperature)
  • 2 1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 3 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • Red and blue food coloring
Frosting Ingredients
  • 2 cups unsalted butter (for frosting, at room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
  • 9 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tsp clear vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup whole milk (add more if it is too thick)
  • Optional: White and purple or violet food coloring To help achieve a bright white frosting

  • Sprinkles (for decorating)

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time while mixing in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients and milk, alternating between the two, starting and ending with dry ingredients.
  6. Divide the batter evenly into three bowls. Leave one bowl plain, color one red, and the other blue using food coloring.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared pans and smooth the tops.
Baking
  1. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  2. Let the cakes cool on a wire rack. Trim any domed tops for even layering when fully cooled.
Assembly
  1. Frost layers with a thick layer of frosting in between and on top.
  2. Decorate with sprinkles and additional colorings as desired.

Notes
