Ingredients
  

For the Chicken
  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken thighs (cut into bite-size pieces) Can substitute with chicken breasts or different proteins
  • cup cornstarch
  • cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
For the Sauce
  • cup chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch For thickening the sauce
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 2 tablespoons grated fresh ginger
  • 2 teaspoons rice vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil
  • ½ teaspoon chili flakes
  • 1 tablespoon chili sauce (optional, can be found at Asian stores) Optional for added heat
For Garnish
  • 2 tablespoons sliced green onion For garnish
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds For garnish

Method
 

Prepare the Chicken
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the cornstarch, flour, salt, and pepper.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat the egg, then add the chicken to it, ensuring each piece is well coated.
  3. Transfer the chicken to the flour mixture, ensuring each piece is evenly coated.
Cook the Chicken
  1. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Spray the air fryer basket with cooking oil.
  3. Place the coated chicken pieces in a single layer in the basket.
  4. Air fry for 10-12 minutes, shaking halfway through for even cooking. Look for a golden brown color.
Prepare the Sauce
  1. In a saucepan, combine the chicken broth, brown sugar, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, garlic, ginger, rice vinegar, toasted sesame oil, and chili flakes.
  2. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, whisking until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Mix the tablespoon of cornstarch with a bit of water to create a slurry, then add to the sauce. Stir until thickened.
Combine Everything
  1. Toss the cooked chicken in the sauce until well coated.
  2. Serve hot, garnished with sliced green onions and sesame seeds.
