Indian Frybread

“Indian Frybread is a crispy and flavorful delight that has been a beloved staple in Native American cuisine for generations. This fried bread, also known as frybread, is a versatile treat that can be enjoyed in various ways. “

INGREDIENTS:

  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons powdered milk
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 cup shortening
  • Extra flour to flour your hands

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 2 tablespoons of powdered milk.
    • Gradually add 3/4 cup of warm water to the dry ingredients, stirring continuously. Mix until the dough comes together and is smooth.
  2. Knead the Dough:
    • Lightly dust your hands with flour to prevent sticking.
    • Transfer the dough to a clean, floured surface.
    • Knead the dough by hand until it becomes soft and pliable but not sticky. This usually takes a few minutes.
    • Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rest for about 15 minutes. This allows the dough to relax and become easier to work with.
  3. Shape the Dough:
    • After resting, divide the dough into small balls, each about 2 inches in diameter.
    • Take each dough ball and pat and stretch it to flatten it into a round disc. You can make them as thin or thick as you prefer.
  4. Heat the Shortening:
    • In a frying pan or skillet, heat the shortening to a depth of approximately 1 inch. Heat it over medium-high heat until it’s hot and shimmering but not smoking.
  5. Fry the Dough:
    • Carefully place each flattened dough disc into the hot shortening.
    • Fry one side until it becomes golden brown, which should take a couple of minutes. Use a spatula to gently press down on the dough to ensure even cooking.
    • Flip the fry bread over and fry the other side until it’s also golden brown.
  6. Serve:
    • Once both sides are beautifully golden, remove the fry bread from the hot oil and place it on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil.
    • Now comes the fun part! You can top your fry bread with a variety of toppings. For a sweet treat, drizzle it with honey or sprinkle powdered sugar. For a savory option, add cooked sausage or even a fried egg.
  7. Enjoy!
    • Serve your homemade fry bread hot and enjoy the crispy, golden goodness.
