Sure, instant ramen is a delight. It’s incredibly quick, remarkably affordable, and manages to deliver a tasty experience, so there’s absolutely nothing wrong with preparing it just as the package instructs.

However! There are numerous ways to utilize that ramen packet that go beyond the basic dorm room preparation. Case in point: the Ground Beef Ramen Skillet.

This recipe takes those familiar quick-cooking noodles and incorporates them into a flavorful, savory stir fry that retains the convenience of a speedy meal while elevating it to a more well-rounded and unique status. (Thanks to the addition of beef and veggies!)

First things first, you’ll want to discard the seasoning packet that accompanies the instant ramen. We’re keeping the noodles but crafting our own flavor profile here.

Not to worry, it’s still a quick process! Since this stir fry moves swiftly, it’s helpful to prepare your sauce and have all your other ingredients ready to go for a seamless cooking experience.

Begin by whisking together the sauce ingredients, which include nothing too out of the ordinary. Feel free to substitute vegetable oil for sesame and omit the hoisin sauce if necessary. Once the sauce is prepared, set it aside for later use.

Water pot

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 large white onion thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1- inch piece ginger grated
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 red bell pepper sliced thinly
  • 2 cups broccoli florets diced
  • 3/4 cup carrots cut into matchsticks
  • 3 packages instant ramen noodles seasoning packets discarded

FOR THE SAUCE:

  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons light soy sauce
  • 1/3 cup chicken broth
  • 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Sriracha sauce or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

FOR SERVING:

  • Green onion minced
  • Sesame seeds

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, whisk together the sauce ingredients: cornstarch, soy sauce, chicken broth, sesame oil, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, Sriracha, and black pepper. Set aside.
  • In a large skillet or wok, heat 2 tablespoons of oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the onion and cook until it becomes soft, approximately 4-5 minutes.
  • Reduce the heat to medium, then stir in the ginger and garlic. Stir briefly for about 15 seconds, then push them to the side of the skillet.
  • Increase the heat to high, then add the ground beef to the pan. Allow it to sit undisturbed for 30 seconds, and then use a wooden spoon or spatula to break apart the meat and cook until it is no longer pink.
  • While the beef is cooking, bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the ramen noodles and cook them 1 1/2 minutes less than the package directions indicate. Drain and toss with 1 tablespoon of oil. Set aside.
  • Reduce the skillet heat to medium-high, then add the bell pepper, broccoli, and carrots. Let them cook until they become crisp-tender, stirring occasionally, for about 3-4 minutes.
  • Stir the sauce one more time, then add it to the skillet along with the ramen noodles.
  • Cook and toss everything together with tongs until the sauce has thickened and coated everything, taking approximately 2-4 minutes.
  • To serve, sprinkle green onion and sesame seeds over the dish. Enjoy!
